Protecting Your Pet's Life
Pets, especially dogs, that are accused of biting humans are sometimes labeled as vicious and dangerous with little thought being paid to the circumstances that led to the incident. Dogs are taken from their owners and locked up. They face the possibility of being euthanized.
I am attorney Madeline Lia Duncan. I represent pet owners in the Denver and Boulder area who are charged with having a vicious or dangerous pet. As a dog owner myself, I understand the deep affection people share with their pets. Your pet should not suffer because someone else may have been acting carelessly. Factors to Consider
Several factors should be considered pertaining to the alleged biting:
- Where did the incident take place? (on your property or in public)
- Did the person injured ignore warnings?
- Did the injured person provoke the pet?
- Does the animal have a history of violent actions?
Dogs rarely act maliciously when unprovoked.
Taking Action
These cases generally end up in municipal or county court. In some cases I attempt to work out a deal with prosecutors in which dogs are returned to their owners as long as both the owner and dog attend some form of training. These agreements often include other reasonable accommodations including making the dog wear a muzzle. Sometimes these cases do go to trial.
